And when the south fired on Sumter in 1861, a call came from President Lincoln for soldiers to defend the Union, Frank Knappen and Horace Brownell enlisted, "and went to the front." Frank fell bravely fighting for the old flag at Kenesaw Mountain, and Horace Brownell was last seen fighting like a hero in a desperate charge on the rebel entrenchments at Gettysburg. As he was never seen after that battle, there is no doubt but what he was among the slain on that great day."2

Note* "was educated in the common and high schools of Kalamazoo and the Northwestern University at Evanston, Ill., being graduated from the latter institution in 1877 in the classical course. He then entered the office of Briggs and Burrows, of Kalamazoo, as a law student, and in October, 1878, he was admitted to practice in that city by the supreme court of Michigan. Entering at once on his professional work, he pursued it with such energy and success that in 1880 he was elected prosecutting attorney, holding the office until 1889. At the close of his official term he organized the law firm of Knappen and Frost, and at the end of a year another partner was taken in and the firm name changed to Irish, Knappen and Frost. This firm lasted three years, at the end of which it was harmoniously dissolved after which Mr. Knappen practiced alone until 1902, when he formed a new partnership with L.T. Flansburg, with whom he is still associated (1906), under the firm name of Knappen and Flansburg... Politically he is a zealous and unwavering Republican, and fraternally belongs to the Masonic order and the Order of the Elks. He has always been prominent in political affairs having held various positions in the Republican party and was presidential elector in the fall of 1904."3
