Note Following is an excerpt from a talk made by Dr. S.E. Massengill at a family reunion, September 9, 1929:
"Susan Massengill married Alexander Porter of Nashville. Among her children was Dr. Robert Massengill Porter, who was a noted scholar, having graduated at Princeton in theology, at Harvard in law, and at the University of Pennsylvania in medicine in December, 1847, and very largely by his means and labor established the medical department of the University of Nashville, and became its first professor of anatomy and physiology. He married, first, Mary Wharton Williams, and, second, the widow Eakin, whose maiden name was Felecia Grundy, the youngest of twelve children of Felix Grundy, who was prominent in Tennessee history."2

Note* "Dal" Massengill "was a private in Company B, 4th Tennessee Cavalry in the C.S.A. After the Civil War he was the local agent at Bluff City for the EastTennesee, Virginia and Georgia Railway, now (abt 1930) the Southern Railway. Later, he was a large general merchant at Bluff City, Tenn., and a tobacco planter and became prominent in local politics. He was very hospitable and his home was the gathering place for many of the kinsfolk. His tobacco was situated in the Holston Mountain, in which section there was a great deal of stealing of timber and tanbark, and unfortunately, he had accidentally seen one Will Mays engaged in this. Mays, in his ignorance, thought the best way out of this trouble would be to kill the witness; therefore, when George Dallas was resting at a spring after a day's work he instantly killed him by shooting him in the back of the head with a rifle. For the deed Mays was hanged".2

In the war between the states he was enlisted in the Home Guards of Sullivan County and did some service in helping to guard bridges and protect private property.
He became a resident of Bluff City after marriage and engaged in mercantile and stock shipping business; was an active member in the M.E. Church, South, and for many years leader of a bible class in Sunday School.
In 1892 removed with his family to Monterey County, Calif., engaged in extensive wheat farming and later in livery business in Salinas, Calif. Always maintained his church affiliations, also those with the Masonic Fraternity and was ever identified with the highest moral element in any community where he resided.
In 1910 he took up his residence in Oakland, Calif., and from that time to the end of his life in 1926 was occupied with real estate activities. Love of home and family was a predominant characteristic always, and after that his church. His service on the building board of the Pioneer Methodist Church, South, in Oakland, and his continuous servive on the Board of Stewards was his chief joy".3
